Who can apply for Macedonian citizenship?
There are various ways of applying for Macedonian citizenship even if you were born in Australia or New Zealand. We’ve provided summaries from the Macedonian Ministry of Internal Affairs website here to assist you below.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH – BORN IN MACEDONIA
A child will acquire Macedonian citizenship if they are born in Macedonia from either one or two parents with Macedonian citizenship.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH – BORN OVERSEAS
If a child is born abroad, and one of their parents is a Macedonian citizenship, then they can apply for Macedonian citizenship for their child prior to turning 18 years old.
If the Macedonian parent does not apply for citizenship by the time their child is 18 years old, then the child themselves can apply for citizenship between the ages of 18 and 23.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT – BORN IN AUSTRALIA OR NEW ZEALAND
Someone born to Macedonian parents overseas, such as in Australia or New Zealand, can apply for Macedonian citizenship through a process known as naturalisation. This is typically the way that most children of Macedonian born parents apply to becomes citizens of Macedonia.
Acquiring Macedonian citizenship by descent requires your parents to first obtain Macedonian citizenship. On the basis of their citizenship, you may then be eligible then apply for citizenship yourself. Only the first generation of descendants however if able to submit an application for Macedonian Citizenship by Descent.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE
If you are married to a Macedonian citizen and have legally resided in Macedonian for three years, of which one year you continuously resided in Macedonia – then you may be eligible to obtain Macedonian citizenship by marriage.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY INVESTMENT
If you are married to a Macedonian citizen and have legally resided in Macedonian for three years, of which one year you continuously resided in Macedonia – then you may be eligible to obtain Macedonian citizenship by marriage.
MACEDONIAN CITIZENSHIP BY SPECIAL INTEREST
If you are married to a Macedonian citizen and have legally resided in Macedonian for three years, of which one year you continuously resided in Macedonia – then you may be eligible to obtain Macedonian citizenship by marriage.

Which documents do I need to apply for Macedonian citizenship by descent?
Below is the list of documents which our clients are often asked for when applying for Macedonian citizenship by descent. We encourage you to contact your local Macedonian embassy or consulate for advice as requirements do sometimes change.
If your documents are in English, then they will all need to be translated by an official translator into Macedonian. We can help translate your documents for you!
All official Australian or New Zealand documents must have an Apostille stamp on them. An Apostille stamp verifies that your document is an official document and the contents of the document are true – only the Australian government can provide this stamp. You can organise an Apostille stamp by contacting Notarial Services via this link and by booking an appointment or sending them your document in the post.
Translations for Macedonian Citizenship
If you are submitting documents to the Embassy or Consulate in Australia – then we can translate your documents for you!
If you are submitting documents in Macedonia – then only a court approved translator in Macedonia can translate your documents for you. Please let us know if this is the case and we will direct you to a colleague of ours who is the only translator in Australia with this particular stamp.

Documents required from Applicant
BIRTH CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
You will need an original Australian birth certificate with an apostille stamp affixed to the back of it. Both documents must be translated into Macedonian by an official Macedonian translator.
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE WITH APOSTILLE STAMP – TRANSLATED
If applicable, you will need an original Australian marriage certificate with an apostille stamp affixed to the back of it. Both documents must be translated into Macedonian by an official Macedonian translator.
FEDERAL/NATIONAL POLICE CHECK – TRANSLATED
You will need a National Police Check that has been translated into Macedonian by an official Macedonian translator. You can find out how to apply for one via the link here.
An ‘Australian National Character Check’ is not sufficient for these purposes and we recommend getting an official National Police Check.
AUSTRALIAN PASSPORT OR DRIVER LICENCE – TRANSLATED
You will need to show your passport or driver’s licence to confirm your identity when applying for Macedonian citizenship. This will need to be translated into Macedonian by an official Macedonian translator
AUTOBIOGRAPY IN MACEDONIAN
Along with your application you will need to submit a short one-page autobiography about yourself written in Macedonian. We recommend detailing the reasons why you would like to become a Macedonian citizen and your connection to Macedonia and the Macedonian culture.
If you cannot write this in Macedonian, then we can translate this for you into Macedonian.
CONTACT INFORMATION OF A RELATIVE IN MACEDONIA
You’ll need to provide the address and phone number of a close relative who lives in Macedonia alongside your citizenship application.

Documents required from Applicant’s Parents
If you are wanting to apply for Macedonian citizenship through descent ie. because your parents were born in Macedonia – then you will also have to provide the Embassy or Consulate with these documents as well.

MACEDONIAN PASSPORTS

MACEDONIAN ID CARDS
You will need present an original Macedonian identity card (lična karta/лична карта) for both your mother and father.
